Major Series Lacrosse: Ontario’s Senior A Box League Explained

Shane McAllister · 3 min read

Understand Major Series Lacrosse, its seven Ontario teams, the 2026 season format and Mann Cup route—and how to read MSL statistics correctly.

Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) is Ontario’s Senior A box lacrosse league, sanctioned by the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Its playoff champion advances to the Mann Cup against the Western Lacrosse Association champion from British Columbia. MSL is a league; the Mann Cup is the national championship series that follows it. Source: MSL league history

It is also a separate competition from the National Lacrosse League, even though many familiar NLL players compete in MSL. The league’s history page notes that most of its star players play or have played in the NLL. Their summer MSL statistics belong in a different ledger from their NLL totals.

Which teams play in MSL?

The 2026 season had seven teams, all based in Ontario:

  • Brampton Excelsiors
  • Brooklin Lacrosse Club
  • Cobourg Kodiaks
  • Oakville Rock
  • Owen Sound North Stars
  • Peterborough Lakers
  • Six Nations Chiefs

The Ontario Lacrosse Association’s 2026 GameSheet standings list all seven entries; Brooklin appears there as “Brooklin L.C.” This is a season-specific list, not a claim that the league’s membership has stayed unchanged throughout its history.

How the season and playoffs work

In 2026, the regular-season schedule comprised 18 games per team. Peterborough’s official schedule release specified nine home games and nine away games, with three meetings against each of the other six clubs. The Lakers’ regular season ran from May into late July. The same release announced a best-of-five first playoff round and a best-of-seven MSL final. Source: Lakers’ 2026 schedule announcement

The four teams that reached the 2026 playoffs were Six Nations, Cobourg, Peterborough and Oakville. Six Nations faced Cobourg, while Peterborough faced Oakville; the Chiefs and Lakers then met in the final. Six Nations won that series four games to two, clinching it with a 10–3 victory on August 30. Source: official 2026 playoff results

Winning MSL earns the eastern berth in the Mann Cup—not the national title itself. The WLA champion supplies the western opponent, and the September championship alternates between Ontario and British Columbia. Source: WLA’s 2026 season announcement

How to read MSL statistics

An MSL scoring point is one goal or one assist: points = goals + assists. The official 2026 player statistics explicitly assign one point to each.

The more easily missed distinction is competition scope. Before describing a total as a scoring lead or record, establish what the table includes:

Statistical scope What belongs in the total
MSL regular season Regular-season games only
MSL playoffs League postseason games only
Combined MSL total Regular season plus MSL playoffs
Mann Cup The separate national championship series

For example, Dhane Smith’s 2026 MSL player page displays 33 goals, 77 assists and 110 points in 23 games. That display includes playoff appearances, including the August 30 final. It is not an 18-game regular-season total. The arithmetic—33 + 77 = 110—is straightforward; the label determines whether the comparison is useful.

The same check applies to team records: the 2026 standings page, with “All Game Types” selected, includes postseason games rather than showing regular-season standings alone.

Historical labels matter too. MSL’s own history reaches back into field lacrosse and identifies 1931 as the league’s final field-lacrosse season. A long-running Ontario championship list therefore does not represent one unchanged box-lacrosse format. Keep the code, season, games played and included competitions attached to any number.
