NCAA Lacrosse’s Career Assist Leaders in Divisions I and II

Shane McAllister · 2 min read

Pat Spencer and Ashley Humphrey lead Division I lacrosse in career assists. See their totals alongside Division II leaders Rick Gilbert and Jackie Sileo.

Pat Spencer leads the NCAA Division I men’s career assist list with 231; Ashley Humphrey leads Division I women with 258 in the NCAA record books through the 2025 season. (Men’s DI records, women’s DI records)

Neither total is the highest in the Division I and II books: Division II’s Rick Gilbert recorded 287 assists for Hobart, while Jackie Sileo recorded 369 for LIU Post. These are career totals in college field lacrosse, not single-season records, NCAA tournament-only totals or professional box-lacrosse statistics.

Division III has separate record books. For example, the women’s Division III book, which includes 2026 results, lists Reese Walker of Meredith with 290 career assists in 82 games, from 2023–26. A Division I record should not be described as an all-division record.

What an assist total tells you—and what it doesn’t

An NCAA assist credits a pass that contributes directly to a goal, in the statistician’s judgment. It is not automatically awarded for the last pass, and only one player can receive an assist on a goal. The men’s statistics manual and women’s statistics manual distinguish a pass that creates the scoring opportunity from one that becomes irrelevant to the finish. For the broader distinction between assists and points, see how lacrosse scoring stats are counted.

Career volume also depends on opportunity. Spencer’s 231 ÷ 68 = 3.40 assists per game, but Tim Nelson holds the men’s DI career rate record at 221 ÷ 57 = 3.88, with an 80-assist minimum. Humphrey, by contrast, holds both the women’s DI career total and rate records: 258 ÷ 75 = 3.44. The total leader and rate leader answer different questions. (Men’s DI records, women’s DI records)

Keep the career years attached, too. Official NCAA men’s lacrosse records begin in 1971, women’s DI records in 1982, and women’s DII records in 1998. Those are the boundaries of these NCAA records—not a claim that earlier college lacrosse never produced great passers. (Men’s records, women’s DI records, women’s DII records)
