Where Ottawa's and Philadelphia's NLL Numbers Go After the Fold

Nothing happens to the numbers. When the NLL announced on Sept. 10, 2026 that the Ottawa Black Bears and Philadelphia Wings had discontinued operations and would not play the 2026-27 season, every goal, assist, save, win and loss those clubs recorded stayed where it was: on the box scores of completed games, credited to the club and season in which it was earned. The Sept. 15 dispersal draft moved player rights, not past production. The only real record-book question a fold raises is lineage: does the dead name close a ledger for good, or do its seasons belong to a franchise still playing somewhere else? Ottawa and the 2018 Wings close their ledgers. The other Philadelphia Wings, the 1987–2014 original, never folded at all; that ledger runs through New England and Albany and is open today under the Oshawa FireWolves, the club that picked first in the dispersal draft.

What the NLL Announced and What It Left Out

The league did not say “folded”. Its notice said the two clubs had “discontinued operations” and that the NLL would go forward with 12 active member clubs for 2026-27, its 40th-anniversary season. That is down from 14 clubs. Read the NLL announcement about Ottawa and Philadelphia. The release covers operations and the season ahead. It says nothing about historical box scores, career totals or which franchise history a record belongs to.

That silence cuts both ways. The NLL has not announced that any Ottawa or Philadelphia statistic was erased, reassigned or merged. It also has not published a rule saying defunct-club statistics are retained forever, or how a relocated franchise’s eras are combined in the official record. What follows is the convention this site uses for the all-time NLL record book, built from what the notices do establish; where the league has not ruled, that is stated.

Four ledgers are in play when a club stops:

1. Player career totals: production recorded in completed games.
2. Completed team-season results: scores, wins, losses, standings.
3. Franchise-lineage records: the organization or city era credited with a record.
4. Future player rights: who may sign or control a player after dispersal.

A shutdown and a dispersal draft touch only the fourth. The first two are settled history. The third is where the judgment lies.

A Dispersal Draft Moves Player Rights, Not Box Scores

Ottawa and Philadelphia players went into a combined dispersal draft on Sept. 15, 2026, with the Oshawa FireWolves choosing first; players not selected became unrestricted free agents. Everything in that process concerns where a player goes next.

Panther City set the precedent two years earlier. In August 2024 the NLL announced the franchise would “cease all operations” and put its contracted players into a dispersal draft among the 14 remaining teams ahead of free agency. The operative word is future. Dispersal decides a player’s next roster or free-agent status and nothing behind him.

Player Totals Stay Under the Club and Season They Were Earned

The NLL publishes runner categories including games played, goals, assists, points, penalty minutes, power-play goals and assists, shorthanded goals, loose balls, turnovers, caused turnovers, blocked shots, shots on goal and faceoffs, plus goaltending categories of minutes, wins, losses, goals against, goals-against average, saves and save percentage. Those are the columns on the NLL player-statistics page. The page shows what the league counts; it does not state how long discontinued-club lines stay displayed there.

For a career line, the treatment is mechanical. Suppose a player scored 25 goals for Ottawa in a season and then landed with another club in the dispersal draft. The ledger shows 25 goals as Ottawa Black Bears production in that NLL season, and whatever he scores next under the new club and season. His career total is the sum; the split by club never changes because his old employer stopped existing. The same holds for a goaltender’s wins and save percentage: the games were played, the club that played them is named, and no later transaction rewrites that.

Completed Seasons Stay as Standings Rows With a Status Label

A club shutting down after a season is not the league vacating that season. Ottawa completed two seasons and went 8-10 in each. Those are results of games played under the Black Bears identity, and they remain so even though the club will not dress a roster in 2026-27. In a historical standings table, each Ottawa and Philadelphia season keeps its row. What changes is a status tag on the franchise, “discontinued operations, Sept. 2026”, so a reader scanning completed team-season rows knows why the name stops. Deleting the rows would strip context from every opponent’s results in those seasons. Merging them silently into another franchise would make a lineage call the league has not made.

Records set against a folded club work the same way. A scoring record posted against Ottawa still describes a completed game; whether the NLL files that result under a continuous franchise history or a city era is the separate lineage question.

Relocation Carries the Ledger Forward; Discontinuation Closes It

This is the rule that decides what “folded” means for a record book. A relocation or rename moves an organization to a new market or identity; the ledger continues under the new name and the old name becomes an era within it. A club that discontinues or ceases operations leaves competition; the ledger closes on its last game and no later club inherits it unless the league says so.

Applied to the current cases:

Ottawa is the two-step case. The organization arrived through a New York-to-Ottawa relocation, so its Riptide seasons and Black Bears seasons are one lineage with two city eras. Then it discontinued, so the lineage closes. A franchise all-time list should show a New York Riptide era and an Ottawa Black Bears era under one closed ledger, and never fold either into a club still playing. The NLL notice does not prescribe how the two eras are displayed; era labels preserve both documented facts without asserting more.

Why the Two Philadelphia Wings Are Separate Franchises

The name is the trap. The Wings that discontinued operations in September 2026 launched in 2018. The Wings that played from 1987 through 2014 are a different organization: after 2014 that franchise became the New England Black Wolves, moved again as the Albany FireWolves in 2021, and moved again to become the Oshawa FireWolves. Its record book never closed. Every goal scored for the original Wings belongs today to the FireWolves’ franchise history, and the FireWolves, not the 2018 Wings, are the club whose all-time totals include those 1987–2014 seasons.

So a “Philadelphia Wings all-time” record is ambiguous until you say which one. A shared city and nickname do not join two ledgers. The original Wings are labeled “Philadelphia Wings, 1987–2014, now Oshawa FireWolves”; the second club is “Philadelphia Wings, 2018–2026, discontinued”. The 2018 club’s records are complete and final. Combine them only if the NLL expressly rules that the second club inherited the first’s history, which it has not done in any public notice.

What Is Confirmed for 2026-27 and What the League Has Not Ruled

Confirmed by the NLL notice and reporting on it:

• Ottawa and Philadelphia discontinued operations and will not play 2026-27.
• The league will operate with 12 active member clubs that season, down from 14; nothing says 12 is permanent.
• A combined dispersal draft for both clubs’ players was held Sept. 15, 2026, with Oshawa picking first.
• Ottawa began play in 2024 after the New York Riptide relocated from Long Island.
• The original Wings and the 2018 Wings have distinct organizational histories.

Not established anywhere public:

• A written NLL rule requiring permanent retention of every defunct club’s statistics.
• Permanent public access to discontinued-club player and standings pages on nll.com.
• The official record-book treatment of the Riptide–Black Bears lineage, as one franchise or two eras.
• Any statistical continuity between the original Wings and the 2018 club.
• A formal rule on records set by or against discontinued clubs.

Settling those would take an NLL statistics manual, media guide, bylaws provision or a direct league clarification. Until one appears, the record book keeps the ledgers apart: player production under the club and season it was earned, completed season rows retained with a status label, relocations mapped as eras inside one lineage, discontinuations closed on the last game, and player rights treated as the transaction they are.

Folding Is Not the Same as Relocating

A relocation moves an organization to another market or identity, as when the New York Riptide became the Ottawa Black Bears; the numbers travel with it. A club that discontinues or ceases operations leaves active competition and its numbers stop. Treating the two as statistically identical would require an explicit NLL record-book convention that does not exist.

No Ottawa or Philadelphia Statistic Was Erased

The NLL announcement does not say that completed Ottawa or Philadelphia statistics were erased, cancelled or reassigned, and it provides no archive policy either way. The historical treatment is to keep every completed figure with its original NLL season, club and era label.

The 2018 Wings Do Not Inherit the Original Wings’ Records

The original Wings and the club launched in 2018 have distinct documented organizational histories, and the original franchise’s ledger is still open under the Oshawa FireWolves. A shared name and city are not enough to combine records; the two stay labeled separately unless the NLL rules otherwise.
